Hey there! Having a bit of trouble getting your UJAM plugins to show up nicely in Komplete Kontrol or Maschine? Maybe the cool artwork is missing, or the knobs on your hardware aren't doing anything? ๐ฉ
You've landed in the right spot! This guide will walk you through, step-by-step, how to manually get those NKS files sorted out.
A Quick Heads-Up! ๐ฃ
The best and easiest way to install and update everything is by using the UJAM App. It's designed to do all this heavy lifting for you automatically. Think of this manual guide as a "Plan B" for those rare times when things go sideways or a file gets lost in the digital ether.
ย
โ Before You Start: A Quick Checklist
Let's make sure you have everything you need for a smooth ride.
- UJAM Plugin(s) Installed? You'll need the actual UJAM plugin installed and authorized on your system first. These NKS files are just support staff; they aren't the main event!
- Native Instruments Software Ready? Make sure you have the latest versions of Komplete Kontrol and/or Maschine software installed. The Native Access app is your best friend for keeping these up-to-date.
- Got Admin Powers? ๐งโโ๏ธ We'll need to copy some files into system folders, so you'll need administrator access on your computer.
- All Quiet on the Music Front? Please completely close your DAW (Ableton, Logic, Pro Tools, etc.) and the standalone Komplete Kontrol/Maschine apps. This prevents any "file is busy!" errors and lets the software see the new files properly when we're done.
ย
๐ค So, What's NKS Anyway?
NKS (Native Kontrol Standard) is like a universal translator ๐. It's a cool piece of tech from Native Instruments that lets software plugins (like ours) talk directly to their hardware controllers (like your Komplete Kontrol keyboard or Maschine).
When a plugin is NKS-ready, you get awesome perks like:
- Browse Everything from Your Hardware: Find and load sounds from all your UJAM plugins without touching the mouse.
- Instant Sound Previews: ๐ง Hear a little snippet of a preset before you even load it.
- Pre-Mapped Knobs: ๐๏ธ The important controls are already mapped to your hardware's knobs and buttons. Tweak away!
- Light Guide Magic: ๐ก (For Komplete Kontrol keyboards) The lights above the keys show you key switches, playable ranges, and more.
Sometimes, due to system permissions or different plugin formats, these crucial "bridge" files can get misplaced. This guide is here to put them exactly where they need to be!
ย
Part 1: Download the Goodies ๐
First things first, let's grab the files.
- Click this link to our shared folder: UJAM NKS Support Files
- Find the folder named after the plugin you're fixing (e.g., Virtual Bassist DANDY).
- Download that entire folder to a place you can easily find, like your Desktop.
Part 2: The Manual Fix ๐ ๏ธ
Here's where we get our hands dirty. Follow the steps for your operating system.
ย
For Windows Users ๐ฅ๏ธ
Step 0: Reveal Hidden Folders
- Open File Explorer.
- Click the View tab -> Options.
- In the new window, click the View tab again.
- Select "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" and click OK.
Installation Steps:
Copy the files from your downloaded folder to the destinations below.
| File Type / Purpose | Source (in your Download) | Destination Path on Windows |
| ๐น Preset Files (.nksf) | [Plugin Name]/User Content/ | C:\Users\%Username%\Documents\Native Instruments\User Content\ |
| ๐ผ๏ธ Database & Image Files | [Plugin Name]/NI Resources/ | C:\Users\Public\Documents\NI Resources\ |
| ๐งพ Service Center File (.xml) | [Plugin Name]/Service Center/ | C:\Program Files\Common Files\Native Instruments\Service Center\ |
- Pro Tip: When you copy the NI Resources files, Windows might ask if you want to merge folders. Say yes! Don't replace the whole folder.
ย
For macOS Users ๐
Step 0: Access the Hidden User Library
- Open Finder.
- Click "Go" in the top menu bar.
- Press and hold the Option (โฅ) key.
- "Library" will appear in the menu. Click it!
Installation Steps:
Copy the files from your downloaded folder to the destinations below.
| File Type / Purpose | Source (in your Download) | Destination Path on macOS |
| ๐น Preset Files (.nksf) | [Plugin Name]/User Content/ | Macintosh HD/Users/<YourUsername>/Documents/Native Instruments/User Content/ |
| ๐ผ๏ธ Database & Image Files | [Plugin Name]/NI Resources/ | Macintosh HD/Users/Shared/NI Resources/ |
| ๐งพ Service Center File (.xml) | [Plugin Name]/Service Center/ | Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Native Instruments/Service Center/ |
| โ๏ธ Preference File (.plist) | [Plugin Name]/Preferences/ | Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/ |
- Heads Up! For the .xml and .plist files, you're going to the main system Library folder, not the hidden user one.
Part 3: The Grand Finale - Rescan! โจ
You're almost there! Just copying the files isn't enough. We need to tell the NI software to look for them. This step is mandatory!
- Open the standalone Komplete Kontrol or Maschine app (not inside your DAW).
- Go to Preferences:
- macOS: Komplete Kontrol > Preferences
- Windows: File > Preferences
- Click the Library tab, then hit the Rescan button under the Factory section. Wait for it to finish.
- Next, click the Plug-ins tab and hit Rescan there, too.
- Check that the path to your UJAM VSTs is correct under the Locations tab.
- Close the Preferences window.
Voilร ! ๐ Your UJAM plugin should now be fully integrated, with presets, artwork, and controls all working perfectly.
Still Stuck? ๐ค Troubleshooting & FAQ
- "My plugin still isn't showing up!"
- This is usually a plugin path issue. Double-check that the correct VST folder for UJAM is listed in Komplete Kontrol's Preferences > Plug-ins > Locations, then rescan. On Mac, make sure you're using the VST version, not the AU. For Apple Silicon Macs, you might need to run your DAW or Komplete Kontrol in Rosetta mode for full compatibility.
- "The presets are there, but the artwork is missing."
- This is a classic image path problem. Carefully re-check that you copied the image and dist_database folders into the correct NI Resources folder (Users/Public/Documents on Windows, Users/Shared on Mac).
- "Do I need to register my UJAM plugin in Native Access?"
- Nope! UJAM plugins are authorized only through the UJAM App and your account on our website. No need for Native Access here.
- "I see presets on my computer but not on my hardware!"
- Check your hardware! Make sure the "Factory" library view is selected, not the "User" view. Our presets live in the Factory library.
